I am the first to click on any new romantic comedy the second it hits my Netflix home page.

But that doesn’t mean I like all romantic comedies.

I mean romantic comedies were the movies that built up my notions and ideologies on love, friendships and careers. So I do hold them up to pretty high standards.

I think it’s safe to say that I was raised on television. I never missed an opportunity to catch a romantic flick because it was always one of the safest things I could watch on TV without my mom snatching the TV remote from me because the content wasn’t fit for a child.

Netflix has been pumping out a new romcom, every couple of months and since that is the platform I watch stuff on the most, I am okay with it.

The latest romantic comedy meets hangover-ish movie that Netflix has brought to our screens is Desperados, starring Nasim Pedrad, Anna Camp and Sarah Burns.

What’s Netflix’s Desperados about?

The movie is set in Los Angeles and begins with Nasim’s character Wesley, royally tanking a job interview at a Catholic School. She wants to be a guidance counsellor. Her love life is in shambles and  her job search is equivalent to a sound clip of crickets screeching. Wesley’s only respites are her two best friends Brooke (Anna Camp) and Kaylie (Sarah Burns).

They are super sympathetic to her issues and are always down to help her out. They set her up on a date with a guy named Sean, who uses the automatic out option i.e. tells her no within five minutes of being on a date with her. The nice part about this incident is that Sean is played by Lamorne Morris, whom you may know as Winston Bishop from New Girl.

So seeing Ally and Winston from New Girl once again was a cute moment in the movie.

Following this disappointment, Wesley’s life takes a turn for the better when she has an accidental meet-cute with Jared (Robbie Amell). He is a handsome man, with a sensitive side and a great job and Wesley was ready to lock it down. So she decides to pretend to be the kind of girl Jared would be interested.

After a whirlwind romance, and a passionate rendezvous in the bedroom, Jared cuts off all communication with her for almost an entire week, causing Wesley to go into a complete downward spiral.

She and her girls get wine drunk and write a horrendous email to Jared bringing up his troubled past with his father and many other vile comments. Backed by hurt, rage and liquid courage, they decide to send the email.

In that very moment Wesley gets a call telling her exactly why Jared hasn’t contacted her in so many days. She panics and decides to go to Cabo (where Jared is ) and delete the email from his laptop or phone before he has the chance to see it.

That’s the premise of the film.

What happens in Cabo and whether she manages to delete the letter and get her only chance at love (according to Wesley) back is for you to find out.

Desperados: Honest Movie Review

I love a good romantic comedy but unfortunately Desperados, did not meet the mark. As much as I love Lamorne and Nasim, they couldn’t save the chaotic mess that was this film.

The story was just average, nothing too spectacular. We have seen the email fiasco before in Nancy Meyers movies like the Intern before. And the obsessed teenager (from the Hotel in Cabo) is also a plot line that is tired and played out many times.

Other than maybe the dolphin humping scene, there wasn’t anything that really stays in your mind about this film. It’s mundane and forgettable.

I believe that besides the story of course, there are three aspects that could be considered saving graces in films. I call it my three C’s

Casting

Honestly, I think the casting was really good in Desperados. All the actors were believable as their roles and played their parts the best they could. Especially Lamorne, who we know as the lovable goof, really expressed his smooth side in the film, which was an absolute joy to watch.

Anna Camp as the uptight scorned wife who gets tired of her friend’s shit and Nasim as the delusional friend who is always making everything about her were really great too.

Unfortunately I believe the story did not give these actors a chance to shine.

Clothing

Sometimes I feel like I should just take Clothing out of rotation for Netflix films because their movie wardrobes rarely take my breath away. In fact I can’t remember the last Netflix movie that did that. Maybe the Wedding Year?

The only person’s wardrobe I felt was even relevant and trendy in Desperados was Wesley’s. Her white casual tops and shirts with muted colours were definitely something I feel like every girl who enjoys a classic style should have in her closet.

Chemistry

Although Jared and Wesley did not give me the feels, Sean and Wesley kind of did. Especially when they got to dance and get to know each other. It wasn’t really Mathew Mcconoghaey and Kate Hudson level, but there was something there.

What I really did like is the chemistry between the three best friends i.e. the Desperados. I absolutely loved their supportive relationships and their willingness to be upfront with each other when things got out of hand.

Final Thoughts on Desperados:

I don’t think Desperados is worth the watch. If you want something mindless and ridiculous then maybe check it out. But otherwise I think you should skip it.
