There are two main types of positive coping mechanisms:

Emotion based Coping Mechanisms:

Emotion based coping mechanism is a positive coping mechanism because it’s sole purpose is extremely positive – i.e.to help you feel your feelings. Your main focus using emotion based coping mechanisms is to spend time expressing s your emotions.

There are different ways to use emotion based coping mechanisms:

1.Meditation

The word meditate literally means ‘to become familiar with’. Take five minutes, 10 minutes or even a whole hour in the morning or at some point during the day just to calm  your mind and get to know your inner self. Once you become familiar with your thoughts, you will be able to get to know who you are really are, become more present and master your emotions.

2. Journaling

Journaling is the process of writing down your thoughts on a daily basis. Seeing your thoughts written, and reading how you feel can be a really transformational experience. Journaling helps you get clarity on situations in your life and how you feel about it.

3. Reframing

A slightly more difficult emotional positive coping mechanisms is to re-frame your thoughts about the situation.

If you boss has dumped a lot of work on you, maybe reframe the thought in your head from

Oh I have so much work to do.

to…

I get to do all this great work, and my boss will know how hard I work.

4. Give Yourself a Pep Talk

Talk yourself through a bad time. No one understands you better than you.

4. Talk a Bath / Shower

Baths and showers can be extremely calming to the senses. It’s also a great place to be alone with your thoughts.

5. Exercise

Exercising done at a comfortable rate without over exerting yourself, can be a great stress buster. Also it helps release endorphins in the brain which will surely get you out of a funk.

The second positive coping mechanism is…

Problem Based Coping Mechanisms

Problem based coping mechanism is a positive coping mechanism and it’s main purpose is to solve the problem that is causing you to employ the coping mechanism. It’s a more solution oriented coping mechanism. It focuses more on solving the problem rather than dealing with the emotion the problem is bringing out inside you.

There are different types of problem based coping mechanisms:

1.Time Management

Set yourself up for success. Set a time limit that allows yourself to think about the issue at hand and then force yourself to make a decision within that time.

2. Ask for Help

It’s okay to ask for help. It’s not possible to do everything on your own. Ask for help, or just talk to a friend or a professional and get your feelings out in the open.

3. Developing Healthy Boundaries

Toxic people can make  life hard to live. Setting boundaries with people who drain your energy, can be life changing. You will find that you feel happier, more energetic and attract more people who are more on your wavelength.

4. Creating To-do Lists

Once you figure out the solutions to your problems, you can break down the steps it would take to achieve your solution into smaller parts. Creating a to-do list of all the things you have to do and checking them off one by one, is the greatest feeling ever.
