“When I was 6, my best friends were the shampoos in my bathroom–I’d have conversations with them. I didn’t have friends & was alienated for my humble background–my brother & I only got 2 new clothes per year. Every night, I’d pray to wake up to a closet full of shoes. I was shamed for my crooked teeth & skinny body too. I was called, ‘Bag of bones, kaali lakdi & sukhi dandi.’ People thought it was funny to say I’d fly away with the wind–it wasn’t. I began battling anxiety–I didn't even know it was called anxiety. The bullying worsened over time. Kids would taunt me & throw chalks at me. During a farewell party, I wore an outfit bought from my savings. But it didn’t fit the dress code, so a teacher paraded me in front of everyone & said, ‘You look hideous, get out of my sight’. I was even asked to get off stage because I was ‘ugly’. I wanted to break down, but I’d stop myself. So I moved to Delhi to start over. At that time, I fell in love with a boy miles away–but he ghosted me after he met me for the first time. I blamed myself & shut people out for a year. I didn’t want to feel that way ever again & focused on being financially independent. I sold clothes from Sarojini online & emceed at malls. I avoided going out, to save more. My old love for fashion came out as well–I created a fashion blog, worked as a stylist & began making videos. I created characters, just like I did with those shampoo bottles as a kid. Life has come full circle–I moved from my small hometown to renting my own place in Delhi & from being bullied for my clothes to international fashion trips. But I’m most proud of transforming into a woman who can afford the life of her dreams; all without changing a thing about herself! To this day, I get hate but it doesn’t affect me anymore–a while ago, I heard 2 girls calling me ‘ugly’ on the metro, but as I moved away, another girl asked me for a selfie. There will always be haters, but I focus on the positive; on the itch that’s allowed me to get to where I am today. And this is a pretty amazing place to be–after all, my crooked teeth & skinny body got me from 2 pairs of clothing to a walk in closet… mic drop.”
