I have already established that I love all things comedy and I absolutely love stand up comedy.

In this post I have listed my favourite stand up comedies that I say are a must watch for everyone who loves a good laugh.

Best Comedy Specials to Watch on Netflix Right Now

10. Wanda Sykes – Not Normal

You may be familiar with Wanda Sykes from her innumerable TV and movie appearances. And yes, she is a comedian first. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I started watching her Netflix special, but I was entertained to say the very least.

Wanda Sykes’ jokes were tight, topical and on point. She tackles politics, reality TV and secrets she wishes she could take to the grave.

9. Tiffany Haddish – Black Mitzvah

Tiffany Haddish has one of the most unique comedy specials I have ever seen in my life. The intro performance had me hooked complete with background dancers and everything.

In her comedy special she talks about her life, how she used to be homeless, Drake’s dad, Beyonce and how she became the star she is today. She did this special to celebrate her 40th birthday and it could not have been more like a party.

8. Seth Myers – Lobby Baby

SNL veteran and Late Night Host, Seth Myers does a comedy special after years behind the desk, and trust me it’s worth it. He shares mostly personal stories from his life, which he doesn’t get to do much of, in his late night stint.

Seth shares stories about his late engagement, failed moments as a father and his classic political humour, in a light-hearted manner with vivid detail. His ability to describe moments and scenarios, makes you feel as if you were actually right there with him when these moments happened.

7. Katherine Ryan  –  Glitter Room and In Trouble

I prefer Glitter Room to In Trouble. In Glitter Room, American Comedian Katherine Ryan shares her opinions on dating, Celine Dion, revenge bodies, school bullies and how much she recommends you raise your child British.

Her sharp wit and keen observations are sure to have you laughing in no time.

6. Trevor Noah – Son of Patricia

Trevor Noah, who is more popularly known for hosting the Daily Show, has one of the best comedy specials on Netflix. In his second stand up special Son of Patricia, Trevor talks about trap music, eating tacos for the first time, going to Bali and  meeting President Obama.

His ability to mix relatable observations, captivating storytelling and personal experiences makes you feel like you are just having a chat with that one hyper friend in your group, who is secretly also very smart and well-read.

5. Ricky Gervais –  Humanity

Ricky Gervais has an absolutely unparalleled sense of humour. His wit and comedic timing is absolutely flawless. To me he is the King of Roasts. He can crack a joke about anything and anyone, in a flash of a second.

His raw British humour which masterminded popular shows like The Office and After Life,  takes on society, celebrities, social media in one of the best comedy specials I have seen on Netflix and is aptly titled Humanity. It questions the purpose of humanity and where we are going to end up in the future.

4. Hannah  Gadsby – Nanette  and Douglas

Hannah Gadsby is a comedian like you have never seen before. The Australian comedian has a unique sense of a humour, that is an absolute joy to watch. In Nanette, which is one of the most heartwarming and best comedy specials I have ever seen, she talks about coming out, her awkward childhood and how she never felt like she even fit in with the LGBTQIA+ community.

She has two specials out on Netflix. The first one is Nanette which got her all her critical acclaim. But I found her second special Douglas to also be a masterpiece because in the beginning of the show she explains exactly what people can expect from her show in excruciating detail. And you would think that would make it less funny but in fact it made it funnier.

“Where do the quiet gays go?” – Hannah Gadsby

3. Kevin Hart – Seriously Funny, Let Me Explain, Laugh at My Pain and I’m a Grown Little Man

Kevin Hart is the most popular stand up comedian and comedy actor in the world right now. Although he has a slightly controversial past, his delivery and ability to tell a story is just impeccable. You can’t help but laugh at and with Kevin Hart.

The world’s first comedy superstar has many specials available on Netflix, but my favourites will always be his first four comedy specials. He talks about his dysfunctional family, his childhood, friendships, his cheating scandal, his kids and so much more. And yes, one of these specials does contain the joke, Mr. Hart was called out for after he was offered the opportunity to host the Oscars.

2. Dave Chappelle’s  Sticks and Stones, Equanimity and The Bird Revolution

Dave Chapelle is one of the most legendary comics of all time. He is the only comedian to have won the Mark Twain prize for American Humour on the list. He was also the youngest comedian to ever win the award.

He combines politics, topical news and so-called taboo topics, intersperses them with personal experiences and history lessons. This man knows how to weave a story like no other and is one of the coolest cats in the business.

I must warn you he does get into some topics that can be triggering to many, so please take it with a pinch of salt and understand that these are all just jokes. He walks the fine line between humour and dark humour like no other.

In Sticks and Stones, he talks about transgender people, OJ Simpson, lynching, Kevin Hart, Michael Jackson’s pedophile claims, abortion and cancel culture.

Before you watch his special I suggest you watch this video to understand the Jussie Smollet scandal. He was an actor on the show Empire who well… faked his own hate crime.

Here’s a snippet from the show:

1.Daniel Sloss Dark and Jigsaw

shorturl.at/iwBE5

Daniel Sloss has two of the best comedy specials (available on Netflix). I found it to be some of the smartest comedy I have ever seen in my life. I have watched it so many times and it never stops being funny. Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss talks about having liberal genius parents, a disabled sister, body hair, Beyonce,  the ‘Sloss Ness Monster’ and relationships in the most ingenious way.

What makes his sets so incredible is how well-timed, deep, dark and cleverly written it is. And his ‘jigsaw’ analogy is one of the best analogies for life that I have ever come across.

“That’s why they call me Dental Sloss.”
